Too Fast!
There are certain times when it’s not such a good idea to listen to your son. This would be one of them.
I will admit that I have a tendency to drive a little bit faster than my wife does. When I’m in my car (as opposed to the mini-van), the gas pedal gets even closer to the floor. It doesn’t happen very often, but every once in a while I find myself driving one of the kids some place in the car so that the minivan can be available for other things.
The first time this happened, C was very excited. He loved the prospect of driving in “daddy’s car.”
As we pulled out on to the highway, he called out from the back seat, “daddy!”
“Yes?”
“Go fast”
“Fast?”
“Faster, Faster!”
Heh, heh, heh. I have a manual transmission, so I engaged the clutch a little, zoomed the engine a few times, and then we accelerated 5 mph or so. He loved it.
“Pass that truck! Pass that truck!”
I passed the truck. As we went by, he looked over at the truck and called out ”So sorry truck! We’re too fast! Too fast! So sorry.”
That was too much for me. I passed another car and joined him in apologizing as we went by. Several more cars and trucks slid past before I came to my senses. Slaloming through traffic with a three year old in the back seat is probably not the best idea. Some would say it’s the worst.
However, it wasn’t all bad. The very next time we went biking, I was pulling the trailer with the kids when I heard him say “faster, daddy, faster!”
As I cruised past J, he called out “So sorry, momma! We’re too fast! Too fast! So sorry!”
Taunting a rider who is not pulling a bike trailer is not exactly the best way to start an impromptu race, but it sure is fun hearing him apologize for how fast we are!
