When I Grow Up
One of the common topics of debate among 3 and 4 years olds is what they want to be when they grow up. Some want to be firemen, others astronauts, and so forth. I have stayed out of this particular discussion because I’m not sure I’m ready to hear the answer yet. After all, it might have something to do with the color pink.
Also, my fondest ambition when I was a little tyke was to be a hobo. I wanted to ride the rails and see the country, just me and my dog. I’m not sure how I would take to hearing that sort of thing from my child.
Nonetheless, some things are inevitable. We were sitting at dinner one day when J brought it up with the boys. She was talking about one of their friends, saying “Mikey wants to be an astronaut when he grows up, doesn’t he?”
“Yep!” N said.
“Not me, ” said C.
“No?” I asked, dreading the next line.
“Nope. When I grow up, I want to be a daddy!”
Awwww… Now doesn’t that just bring a tear to your eye?
Happy Labor Day everyone!
My fondest memory of the “what do you want to be when you grow up” variety occurred when my little brother at age 6 announced that he wanted to be a dog when he grew up. Then he was going to become a famous scientist and discover a new invention. Then he was going to be an explorer, discover a new island and buy it with the money he obtained with his invention. and then live happily ever after. The Hobo and train must have come after that!
Actually, I’m still kind of into the whole buying an island thing. Unless my investments in the Florida Lottery pay off, however, that probably won’t happen…
Back to color pink!!! At a restaurant meal last week with J, C and N..and Nana and Grandpa: N began flirting with the waiter, smiles, waves and just being a cute and good two year old. C was in a corner seat with less exposure to the waiter than N, who was in a high chair on the aisle. Anyway the charmed waiter went to get N a balloon, and when he asked us what color, we said two please. N then was to get a green one, but when asked C wanted a pink..which he got. I told him I was glad he got his pink back, and he smiled and said he hadn’t lost his purple either!!!
