It’s True, Isn’t it?

There’s a monthly ritual in our neighborhood called “Girls Night Out.” You’re probably familiar with this concept. The idea is for all the women to leave their husbands and children behind so they can go out drinking together [Edit: See my comment below]. The other night was just such a night.

Because our driveway is rather centrally located, a bunch of them met there, did some car consolidation, and then formed a convoy out to the restaurant. I was out playing with the boys when the cars started arriving, and the whole thing turned into a big production. As they lined up to leave, we stood in the front yard, waving goodbye to each one.

J, of course, left with them.

As we were going back inside, C asked me where they were going. I explained that they were having a party, and that it was girls only.

“Only girls?” he asked, wrinkling up his nose.

“Yep.”

“But I didn’t see…” He listed the names of several of the moms’ daughters.

“No. Just adults. Just grown up girls – Ladies”

“Ladies?”

“Yep.”

“What do they do?”

“They have a party.”

“Do they keep their shoes on?”

This was so odd that I couldn’t help myself. “Nope,” I said. Then I dropped my voice to a whisper, and looked around to make sure no one was listening. “In fact, you know what they do when they all get together like that?”

Now I had both boys attention. I stretched the pause out as long as I could, and then delivered The Secret: “They have a pillow fight.”

Huge smiles spread across their faces. “Really? Really?”

“Yep!”

They both started giggling.

Heh, heh, heh.

I’ve had it pointed out to me that Girls Night Out is not about drinking. Instead, they just go out, have dinner, and talk.

So there it is: mystery solved. It’s not a pillow fight, it’s not drinking. It’s sitting around and chatting.

    Who knew?

Well, somtimes,it also involves smearing chocolate cake on your teeth and grinning maniacally at other customers….
