Don’t Drop the Baby!
At some point in the past few months, J almost dropped N. Well, not really, but she looked like she was going to. It was one of those things where you’re carrying the infant and you switch from one arm to the other at the same time that he decides to try to fling himself away from you. It happens to all of us at some time or another, and we all catch the baby in time, and we all look clumsy doing it. It’s just part of the way things go.
This time, however, she had an audience of C and myself. I said “No dropping the baby, mama!, no dropping the baby!” C decided this was a wonderful thing to say, and repeated it also: “No Dropping the Baby, Mama!”
Needless to say, mama wasn’t too happy about that. And she hasn’t gotten any happier hearing C shout it pretty much anywhere else that it looks like he might have an audience.
Monday was the pinnacle, though. We took a friend of ours out to lunch as a thank you for helping us with the move. At the end of lunch, J was holding N and squatting down to pick up the baby bag when C took a running start and body slammed her.
He has a small body, but she still rocked a bit as she stood. C stood back, pointed at her, and shouted “No dropping the baby, Mama! Don’t drop the baby!”
I looked up from gathering the toys off the table – having missed the entire exchange – and said “yeah, mama! No dropping the baby!”
In my defense, I was just teasing. Anyone who looked at me would have seen me smiling.
Unfortunately, no one in the restaurant was looking at me. They were all looking at J.
I think I’m going to have to get some daddytales business cards printed up – just so I can hand them out when these sorts of things happen.
I really enjoy your anecdotes about your kids and the funny things they do. As the new parent of a 7 week old, I am looking forward to the time when my husband and I will have cute stories to blog about.

Thanks! When you do get some stories, feel free to e-mail them to me. I’ll be happy to add a new section to the blog.
P.S. Congratulations on your new baby!
