The Getaway

In general, I try to avoid playing games that result in my chasing the kids. I much prefer games where they chase me. However, every once in a while I do end up chasing one or both of the little guys.

Tuesday evening we had the best chase scene yet.

It was time for C to wash his hands for dinner. For us, washing hands involves me lifting him up so that he can reach the kitchen sink. Last night when I said "okay, time to wash hands" and walked towards him, he took off running.

Our house really isn’t that big, so he really didn’t have anywhere to run to. He was just running away from me. Fortunately, my legs are longer than his – and I can see over the furniture and counters. I easily caught up with him.

At which point he leapt on to his truck and zoomed away.

By "car", I mean one of those plastic ride-along toys that has the child sitting on top and pushing with his feet. By "zoomed", I mean he was moving about half as fast as was before he got on to the truck..

Unfortunately, he so clearly believed that his truck was actually "zooming" that I had no choice but to fall behind. I don’t remember letting him watch Dukes of Hazzard re-runs, but I certainly recognized when it was my turn to play the sheriff.

Thanks. I’m afraid J had a slightly different view though. Sometimes “playing Dukes of Hazzard” can look a lot like “letting your dinner get cold”.

    …sigh…
